Our School Library

We have a wonderful library at Jim Thorpe Fundamental. Although many Kindergarten classes do not utilize the library, our class visits each week. Mrs. Rausch, our librarian, begins our 'library time' by reading a story then the children are dismissed, one-at-a-time, after given a book shelf marker, to go and find a picture book of their own! The books are part of their homework for that night.

One of the reasons Kindergartners do not check out library books is because it is considered a big responsibility to 'borrow' then return a book. Both the teacher and the parent must agree that the child may borrow books. Even many 1st grade teachers do not permit the classes to take the library books home; instead, the children borrow the books to read in the classroom! In our class, one book is checked out, per child, to take home for one night. It MUST be returned the following day. Lost or damaged books are the responsibility of the parent. Before children can check out their very first book, a special 'library agreement' must be signed and returned.

Being able to check out a book at the library is a marvelous experience. Going each week is something the children look forward to and the opportunity to choose a book of their own is one that can't be put into words.

There are a large variety of books available for check-out but for Kindergartners, Mrs. Rausch permits only the picture books, for obvious reasons. To search through Thorpe's multitude of book titles online, click here Thorpe's library database.

We love our school library!
