Circle Map: Dear Santa

Using a Thinking Map to write a letter to Santa Claus is a great way to have your child practice sentence writing. In class, we used the Circle Map to generate the various gifts that the children wanted, then using a template, a letter was written. Depending upon the level of sophistication and the ability of the child, modifications can be easily made.

This is a sample Circle Map of a compilation of what was on the wish lists of some of the children:

Since letter writing is a powerful tool for Kindergartners (children at this age LOVE to 'write' to one another, thus, using this as a means to get them to have a reason to write is a great motivator!) There is no reason not to go ahead and teach the correct format for letter writing. Here is a sample template that can be used:

You can download the Kindergarten Letter Writing Paper which has a blank space for drawing a picture then lines for writing the letter at the bottom.

If you want your child to go the next step (we did this in our classroom), get an envelope and have him/her address it to Santa! Place a 42¢ stamp and take it to a Macy's store this holiday season and Macy's will donate $1 toward the Make-a-Wish Foundation in their Believe! campaign.
