On May 1st, we went to check out the tide pools at Little Corona (just south of Newport Beach; for a Google map, click here).
The video, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, provides excellent information to new tide poolers as well as explains the tide pool rules. Tide pool flash cards (set #1 and set #2) can be downloaded to help provide additional frontloading and/or practice.
Easy directions to Little Corona: Take the 73 fwy to MacArthur, turn left on PCH, then turn right on Marguerite. When you get to Ocean Blvd., turn left. The tide pools are located where Ocean Blvd. ends at Poppy Street. Parking is on the streets.
Crystal Cove State Park is another great tide pool for families to visit. Parking is $10 a day unless you own California State Park. The Crystal Cove is just a little further south along PCH, just south of Newport Coast Drive, between Corona del Mar and Laguna Beach. There's a marvelous restaurant right in front of the tide pools called The Beachcomber.
